Prime Video previously revealed that season 3 was officially greenlit ahead of theWGAandSAG-AFTRA strikesand that production would not begin until “after labor negotiations with those unions have been resolved." And ever since both theWGAandSAG strikes endedin 2023, the status of filming has been in limbo since.
In December 2023, fans quickly noted that the show was noticeably absent fromPrime Video’s 2024 teaser trailer, leading many to wonder if the show’s release will be pushed to 2025.

During theMean Girlspremiereon Tuesday, actorChristopher Briney— who plays Conrad Fisher inTSITPand Aaron Samuels inMean Girls' movie musical adaptation — remained tight-lipped about the show’s upcoming season, telling PEOPLE thathe had “no clue” about the status of filming.
“We were supposed to do it last year, so it’s been a long time coming,” he added.
Still, when asked if he was excited to head back to the series, the 25-year-old actor told PEOPLE: “Yeah, for sure.”
In the meantime, the show’s cast is staying busy. Shortly after Briney gave an update on filming, it was announced that Lola Tung would bejoining the cast of Broadway’sHadestownalongsideJordan Fisher.

The third season will likely follow authorJenny Han’s third and final novel in the series, titledWe’ll Always Have Summer. The book takes place two years after the events ofIt’s Not Summer Without Youas Belly (Tung) once again finds herself questioning whether her heart lies with Conrad (Briney) or his brother Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). Only in the third book, she finally makes a decision.
Though season 2 strayed from the books in various ways, whenPEOPLE spoke with the castin June 2023, they all reiterated that a third season would likely follow the third book as much as possible.
“I know Jenny is really just strong on staying as true to the books as possible and hitting the main points,” Casalegno, 24, told PEOPLE.
Added Tung, 21: “There’s so many different ways you could go about it. There’s a blueprint of a book, which we’ve been lucky to have for two seasons now, just such a solid blueprint for us, and to have Jenny on set with us has been incredible.”

Though it’s unclear if the upcoming third season will be the show’s last, Amazon execs teased in September that there could be a spinoff series in the works. Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon and MGM Studios teased toDeadlinethat Amazon was “already hard at work developing complementary pieces.”
When pressed for more information, Sanders replied, “I will say stay tuned, but Jenny’s got some exciting surprises. So we’re thrilled about a season 3, and she’s got a vision for more.”
