Any mention ofGeorge Michael’s “Freedom! ‘90” music video would immediately conjure up a powerful image ofLinda Evangelista,Christy Turlington,Cindy Crawford,Naomi Campbelland the lateTatjana Patitz, who died in January of metastatic breast cancer at 65.

Alone, the models were a commanding presence, but as a collective, their force was strong enough to shake up the industry for decades to come.

Patitz was a Germany-born, Sweden-raised model who set her roots in California after her career kicked off in the 1980s.

Although starring in Michael’s music video (and being shot for a memorable cover ofBritish Voguewith the same group) was what really put Patitz in the public eye, she landed herself in the pages of variousVogueeditions (she earned six covers across the publication) as well as other magazines likeMarie ClaireandCosmopolitan.

She also worked with the industry’s established photographers including Peter Lindbergh, Herb Ritts and Patrick Demarchelier.

Despite all of this, Patitz is barely featured inThe Super Models. She’s shown a few times on screen in scenes from the ’90s — including while filming the iconic music video, as well as in photoshoots with the featured supers. The second episode is also dedicated to her memory.

However, her legacy lives on within fashion’s “fab five.” After her death, Crawford, Campbell, Evangelista and Turlingtonpaid their respectsto their runway comrade.

“We were babies together in the fashion industry and I feel like we grew up together,” Crawford wrote on Instagram, while Campbell reflected on the times they had together as friends in Los Angeles.

“Tatjana took me in, under her wing. I stayed in her apartment for a night in Paris on my way home on the floor of her cool pied de terre on the left bank. You are unforgettable and are forever in my heart,” added Turlington.

On what would’ve beenPatitz’s 57th birthday,Evangelista shared a tribute post to Instagram. “I know your sweet soul is with the angels.”

Leading up the release of the highly anticipated documentary, Evangelista, Campbell, Turlington and Crawford reunited forVogue’s September issue, the most notable issue of the year.

The foursome then appeared at the magazine’s Vogue World fashion show, making anepic catwalk comebackwhile walking hand in hand in glorious metallic gowns. Neither of these appearances made mention of Patitz either, and despite many other iconic models making their marks on fashion in the 1990s, they were not included in the series.
