In July 2022, Harris opened up to PEOPLE about taking on a role that offered him the opportunity to explore a life that looked much like his own.

TheHow I Met Your Motheralum, who has been with his husbandDavid Burtkafor 18 years, explained that the notion “of playing a nuanced comedy version of a life that’s very similar to my own in certain ways — same location as where I live, same length of relationship that I’m currently in — but now it’s totally different” appealed to him.

“How would I, as Neil, in a subtler way, respond to a whole new world?” he asked rhetorically.

For Harris,Uncoupledwas about embracing the comedy that all too often walks hand-in-hand with tragedy.

“When I’ve talked to friends who’ve watched it, someone said in a really astute way that that’s what life is,” he said. “You don’t have a breakup happen and then it’s just sad all the time.”

Heartbroken and still pining for his ex in the series, Michael grappled with how the world has changed in almost 20 years, including the creation of dating apps like Grindr.

“David and I started dating, and we never stopped, so, in an interesting way, it’s all I’ve known,” he toldEntertainment Tonightat the time.

“I didn’t come out till later. I didn’t really date a bunch of random people,” he explained. “I wasn’t around during the times of Grindr, swipe left, swipe right, so, I fell head over heels for this dude, and he was into me, and we started living together really quickly, and now we have 11-year-old kids [Harper and Gideon], and we’re still going strong.”
