Google ’s original Chromebook Pixel wasa beautiful , wonderful laptop . It was also absurdly expensive — so pricey thatit became a tech nerd joke . Now Google ’s following it up with the Pixel 2 , and surprise : it ’s better , cheaper , and hazardously tight to buyable .
What Is It?
The Pixel isa Chromebookin its most perfect mannikin . It ’s an impeccably designed , anathemise handsome laptop computer with a 2560 x 1700 resolve touchscreen , 8 GB of RAM and a 5th gen Intel Core i5 C.P.U. in the $ 1,000 base configuration . An even crazier $ 1,300 interlingual rendition ( the Pixel ’s original price point ) is available with a Core i7 and 16 GB of RAM . Both are available todayfrom Google ’s new on-line store . Both seem like overkill for a car that ’s primarily a WWW web browser .

Design
Drop - dead gorgeous , but not in the fashion you ’d expect . Like its predecessor , the second - gen Pixel is a wonderfully minimalist city block of metallic element with much no stigmatization anywhere . In lieu of a logotype , the Pixel has a tiny slight saloon of colorful lights along the top of the eyelid , and a lilliputian little imprint that says “ chrome ” on its super uncomplicated hinge .
Make no mistake about it : the Chromebook Pixel is not something you could call “ satiny . ” But it ’s thickish and squarish in a really measured way that go down it apart from all the tear - determine MacBook Air aspirer . lust function over form ? The Pixel is a blockish - but - handsome Hummer of a laptop that ’s happy to be a little positive - size if it means elbow room for USB ports .
Speaking of interface , you ’ll find a fancy new Type - ampere-second USB interface on each side — the same kind you ’ll find just one of onthe new MacBook . These things fuckin ’ rock and roll . If you ’re not up to date , USB Type - C is the future of , well , pretty much everything . Like the USB ports that are already all over your gimmick , USB Type - C can do baron and data point , but waaaay better . It ’s as fast as USB 3.0 , and can actually be used to charge your laptop or else of just powering peripherals .

The Pixel ’s USB Type - C charger ( roughly the sizing of a MacBook charger , but with a Type - C port wine on one ending instead of MagSafe ) pop the question enough pizzaz to take the Pixel from empty to full in about an hr and half . And if you want , you could even use an adapter or optional $ 13 Type - atomic number 6 - to-3.0 line to lodge the Pixel from the same wall - verruca you employ to charge your earphone — albeit very slowly .
Like the new MacBook , the Pixel does n’t have HDMI or DisplayPort because USB Type - C can also handle TV . But where the MacBook has a single port and the solution for trouble like desire to charge and apply an external presentation simultaneously is “ go wireless or tough shit , ” the Pixel has two Type - C port , one on each side . you’re able to employ either one for charge while you use the other for video — so long as you buy a $ 40 Type - C - to - HDMI or DisplayPort adapter to plug away it into your monitor .
You wo n’t need adapters for your other computer peripheral , though : the Pixel ’s also stupefy two full - size of it USB 3.0 ports , a 3.5 millimeter phone jack , and an SD card reader . That , plus 32 GB of storage on the root example ( and 64 GB on the more expensive one ) . That ’s not a whole lot , no , but this is a Chromebook ; ideally you ’re not stack away a whole tidy sum on the private road .

For its facial expression , the new Pixel has a 2560 x 1700 231 PPI screen , just like the original Pixel . Google says the projection screen on this new Pixel has as an ameliorate sRGB colour gamut which helps make the semblance start . I ca n’t quite tell the difference , but it sure does expect nice . It also has an unlawful 3:2 aspect proportion , which is a little uncanny when you first observe it . Google ’s reasoning for this is that the Pixel ( and Chromebooks in universal ) are mostly for browse the net , and it have more common sense to have vertical actual - estate when you ’re incessantly scroll through websites . While I ca n’t reason with the logic , I ca n’t say I ’ve ever recover the ratio to be particularly lifetime - changing .
That projection screen is also a touchscreen , although it ’s well-heeled to forget . Though the original Pixel debuted with a pretty shitty touch experience , this one responds quickly and perfectly … but there ’s not a whole fortune to do with it . I spent a few minutes cruise through Chrome with my finger and it was fine , but Chrome still is n’t particularly digit friendly , and since the Pixel does n’t fold all the way back or anything there ’s rarely good reasonableness to poke it .
Never trust photographer with your login .

Using It
This thing is a ambition simple machine , folks . For starters , the keyboard and touchpad are among the best out there . Definitely the upright I ’ve ever used , possibly the best period . Your first sentence on that keyboard is like slip into bed after a longsighted twenty-four hours at work , and the touchpad is just fantastic . It ’s have the perfect semi - glossy grain but more importantly it clicks like a dream . Unlike the touchpad on my MacBook Air which requires insensate strength to amply depress , the Pixel ’s touchpad will countenance you click anywhere with relief . frankly , I detest touchpads without real buttons , but this one I could see myself using .
Combine that with the sieve that blows away any dingy old MacBook Air ( though avowedly on par with recent high - last Windows laptops ) , and the Pixel delivers a really great slug of “ wow . ” People ( myself included ) tend to make little satisfied noises the first clock time they use it . It ’s fantastically well - built .
That sense of satisfaction hold up when you ’re knee deep in tasks , too . Unlike cheap Chromebooks , there are no “ just four or five or six tab at a time ” limitations here . And thoughit ’s no secretI’ve had issue with Chrome on my MacBook , on the 2.2GHz Core i5 - powered Pixel it screams . I could n’t say you why — whether it ’s the 8 GB of RAM , or that ChromeOS is more efficient than the Chrome you ’ll regain on OS X or Windows , or maybe that the Pixel ’s new Core i5 is basically only running Chrome , or one of about 8,324,092,384 other variables — butnone of my gripes with Chromehave raise their ugly psyche here — yet .

So what ’s it like using a laptop that ’s basically a web browser , baffle using Chrome apps ( and an increasing but limited selection of Android apps ) for everything , all the time ?
Honestly , it ’s waaaaay less bound than it was even a few old age ago , and today , it ’s surprising how often there ’s a Chrome university extension for whatever you want . you’re able to get an AIM guest . And a webapp that can edit videos . Chrome has a ( gimped and special - accession ) version of Photoshop now . Even torrenting is relatively picayune via Chrome these days , though you ’ll have to bear a little for the best apps .
Really , ChromeOS will only have you back in two major ways : game and legacy apps . Those can can each be make - or - break depending on who you are , but even if not there could be some psychological pain . By going from anything else to ChromeOS , you are necessarily give up a whole ecosystem of consecrate OS X or Windows or even Linux apps . Do you need to be able to hunt down an old , obscure O X app from 5 years ago ? Probably not , but it still injure to give it up .

And what you get in return are internet browser apps , which can feel a footling crummy by comparison . Some apps — like the calculator , Google Keep , or any of the handful of Android apps that now run on Chrome OS — get their own little applications programme - similar windows . But others , like Google Calendar , or Sheets , and the entanglement apps you download , literally show up as Chrome tabs .
They all work fine , but it ’s intemperate to silo off different parts of your computing life into dissimilar window that you’re able to minimise and organize on your screen when the lion ’s ploughshare of apps pop into existence as just another web browser app pill .
And should you find yourself without net memory access , it ’s voiceless to know which apps will suddenly stop working , because the stock between land site and app is so exhaustively blurred . Google Docs ? Google Sheets ? Google Drive ? Yes , yes , and yes . Google Calendar , playact Music , Gmail ? Nope . And that ’s to say nothing of whatever third - party photo editors and video players and whatnot you pick up along the way .

What about the battery life ? It ’s moderately great ! When I put the Pixel through our stock stamp battery test , it mother approximately 8 and a half hours . Not remotely shabby . I have n’t perplex a chance to put the new Pixel through the near unconquerable gantlet of an entire Clarence Shepard Day Jr. of blogging yet , and I ’ll update when I have . But so far , my bouts of 3 - 4 hours of 8 - 10 pill browse have never knocked the battery below 50 percent . And unlike the original Pixel , the political machine does n’t get so hot that I worry about my birthrate .

The innovation is pick out on . This Chromebook is ( still ) beautiful and a joy to have-to doe with and utilize . That , and it ’s unique . The screen is nice , the keyboard and trackpad are amazing . It ’s all - around keen for my fingers and my sanity .
Charging ports on both sidesssssssss . I should n’t have to explain why this is kookie and great . Never let your laptop ’s charging port localisation order where you sit again !
Battery life is groovy , and if you double tap the top of the Pixel , the light legal community will show you how much you have left !

The downside is that this also go on hatful of metre when you are not asking for it but ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Also thatneat - and - dumb little Konami code easter eggis still there .

This is not a super portable laptop computer . At over three dog pound , the Chromebook Pixel feels jolly damn heavy . This is no razor - thin MacBook .
It only runs Chrome ! When you ’re looking at a $ 200-$400 machine , it ’s easy to see that as a swop - off or a compromise ( although less so than ever with things likeHP ’s endearing slight Stream laptop ) . But when you ’re buying a $ 1,000 laptop computer with slap-up specs , it ’s just a choice . A limiting alternative , with no upsides beyond access to this primo machine .
Should You Buy It
No . But I think like , maaaaaaaaaaaybe ? Nah . But then again …
As wildly agiotage as it is ( in the greater world of Chromebooks ) the Pixel is design to upraise a big question : Is a web web browser enough ? Is it time to bear $ 1,000 for a web browser car ? Has ChromeOS maturate up enough that it ’s not just a budget option ? If you put a gun to my headland , I ’d say the answer is still no , but it ’s a tougher call than it ’s ever been before . The $ 1,300 original Pixel was sort of comical . This $ 1,000 2nd - gen ? Waaaay less so . Especially with a electric battery liveliness that flirts with lasting all day , this is a near unadulterated machine for web - workers , and professional internet - surfers ( like myself ) .
For a purely vane - shop and type machine , the Chromebook Pixel is one of the best out there and certainly one of the best designed . The bulky mapping - over - variant approach make it an interesting and attractive similitude to something like the svelte unexampled MacBook — which opts for a more brawny operating system , but achip that could ultimately leave it less up to .

Still , Google ’s still got a bit of a manner to go to prove that Chrome — something that already lives on every other laptop out there — is worth plunk to the exclusion of something like Windows or OS X. For now , it ’s still not . But if you were cutting to purchase a new Chromebook Pixel anyway , I would n’t examine to talk you out of it .
This flagship premium Chromebook has come a recollective way from its fantastic - but - amusing offset . If ChromeOS had a sea wolf app , some orca sole lineament , the Pixel could become a really square choice for everyone .
