Google Cardboardis still made of composition board . Sorry about that . But the disturbed cheap practical reality viewer does have a Modern interlingual rendition that ’s crowing and good than ever .
What ’s changed ? From a does - this - get on - the - nation - of - virtual - realism perspective , not a whole heck of a mickle . It ’s still just a ball of cardboard with no fancy cameras , positional trackers , or even a headstrap to keep it on .
What it does have now is a bigger , thicker composition board shape that ’s far more durable , and contain phones up to six inch in size of it — with way larger lenses to correct for the bigger screen . Oh , and it ’s beget a push made of cardboard too . No need for finnicky magnets or a metal washer .

How the heck does a cardboard button work ? It ’s jolly coolheaded : You ’re actually press down on a cardboard flapping that ’s linked to a conductive launching pad , which get contact with your phone ’s touch screen when you urge it down . The conductive material stretches all the way of life to your fingertip , so you ’re basically completing the circuit the same way you would if you really touched the screen .
you could put the newfangled Cardboard aside and protect its crystalline lens when it ’s not in utilisation . The sides that cover your face can fold away to protect one side of the genus Lens , and the cardboard strip covering guide tending of the other .
Oh , and there ’s a QR code on the bottom of this unit , too , so that practical reality experiences built with the Cardboard SDK can mechanically adjust for the newfangled optics .

So , is it any different to apply ? My sidekick Brent Rose was outwear his headset while I dissected mine , and here are his thought .
Brent :
Using the new version of Cardboard is much like the original , and that ’s mostly a in effect thing . If you ’ve already used the app with a former version of Cardboard , you just have to go into the configurations and read the QR code on the raw edition . Just drop your speech sound in , delineate it up properly , and you ’re off to the race . I find that it conform to both my Nexus 6 and Sean ’s 4.7 - inch first coevals Moto X , no problem . The previous version of Cardboard was definitely too small to concord the Nexus 6 .

There ’s nothing here that feels all that revolutionary . The lenses are larger and seem to be more or less high quality than on the late reading , but practically speaking it does n’t make too big of a remainder in term of how thing actually take care . The biggest difference is that the new capacitive button works far more systematically than the magnetic system on the previous version . I ’m a little worried that the chemical mechanism may subvert over fourth dimension ( we ’re talking about a cardboard flexible joint ) and that eventually it might not have as much travel , but so far so safe !
There are by all odds some things that ask to be improved , though . For illustration , there has to be a way to switch between third - party made apps without pulling your earpiece out of the Cardboard , manually closing out of one app ( which is often a pain ) , and then see and opening another app , and then place the earphone back into Cardboard . The Cardboard app lists the apps you have uncommitted , but you ca n’t access those within the app while you ’re wear it . Really vexing .
Also , some apps , it seems , have not adjusted for the unexampled looker and I had double vision . The game Lamper - Dive , for instance , produced double - imagination so bad that it was totally unplayable . Apps like that were in the minority , though . The trippy - as - hell Adult Swim app looked great , as did the scary - as - infernal region pernicious 3 app . I might ’ve peed a little .

We ’re really glad to see Google continuing to support Cardboard , but honestly , we want more . I require to seethat awesome Justin Lin Spotlight Storyin Cardboard . I desire it to be easy to switch between apps . And yeah , I need to be capable to strap it to my damn face . But it ’s still very exciting , and Google ’s Cardboard in the Classroom syllabus ( aka Expeditions ) calculate amazing . Any melioration is good , but we want more .
