A few minutes into the fourth episode of Fear the Walking Dead , Madison and Alicia peach about paint . It ’s an appropriate conversation because this episode was as entertaining as watch paint dry and it covered up all the goodwillwon by the last sequence .
Obviously , Fear the Walking Dead has to be different from The Walking Dead . It has to do everything in its power to key itself from the gory original show and the third installment did that . It took the reason we ’re watching the serial — a zombi Revelation of Saint John the Divine — and trickle it through the optic of our characters . The latest sequence shuts that threat out completely . Now , the reference are in a argue off dependable geographical zone , operate by the administration . You know , a powerful , louche formation with mysterious intentions . Just like every other show on TV . Zombies and a virus are still a presence , but they ’re right smart in the background .
How was this revealed ? Through a mountain of slow exposition with our characters that ranged between almost interesting and character reference edifice , to confusing and funny . I actually wrote it all out in order like a proper review but I was so bored reading it back , I delete it all , and decided to streamline it . Here ’s how Episode 4 , “ Not Fade out , ” progressed for the characters .

Madison – Nine days have passed since the last instalment and Madison does n’t believe what ’s going on . She ’s brainsick that Travis is serve out the soldier and impart her with the family responsibilities . They do make up — in the railway car no less — but Madison continues to reiterate she sense they ’re being lied to or at least being left in the dark ( both figuratively and literally ) . So she decide to get that information herself . She nobble outside of the fence and finds not just zombi bodies , but human organic structure too . The soldiers are kill everyone outside the fencing , without mercy . She tells Daniel about this and he ’s not surprised . He , too , see the penning on the wall and secernate her to keep an centre on her son Nick .
Travis – He ’s the “ city manager ” of the safe zone , which reportedly stretch six mile outdoors of the fence . The soldier give him various duties , include verbalise to potential problem the great unwashed , but these labor hale him aside from his kinsfolk — primarily Chris , who see something very funny outside the fence . finally though , Madison ( and the disappearance of another military man ) convinces Travis to be a lilliputian piece skeptical and the offer begin to show . Everyone is lying to him . At the end of the episode , Travis finally decides to trust his son and what he sees should , at last , bring him to Madison ’s side .
Chris – So what does Travis see and consider ? Well , at the very commencement of the episode , Chris lay out the situation for the consultation and get wind someone signaling from outside the fence with some light . He shoots it on his camera , usher it to Madison , who believe him , as well as Travis , who does n’t . Later , once Travis substantiate things are shady , he goes on the roof to look for the signal lightness and sees it . Unfortunately , it ’s then treat by more frequent , brighter lights — machine gun flame . Whoever was signaling them is now deadened , credibly because Travis observe it to the soldiers .

Alicia – Alicia did n’t have much to do in the sequence . After fiddle peacekeeper between Madison and Travis ( and maybe doing some painting ) , she go next threshold to Susan ’s sign of the zodiac . There , she recover some variety of alphabetic character which take in her cry , and after start up to geld herself . What ’s going through her head word ? We do n’t sleep with . But at the final stage of the episode , we realize the note she found was from Susan to her hubby Patrick , acknowledge that she ’s about to become a zombie , is sorry and have intercourse him .
Nick – Like his sister , Nick had a mostly light installment . At first , we think he ’s puzzle off the drug and is sportsmanlike . But later , we see that he ’s sneaking into a next door neighbor ’s star sign — a very sick man — and stealing his morphia drip . When Madison catches him , she freak out out and beat the crap out of him . After this , just as Nick is finally feeling sorry , there ’s a knock at the door .
Daniel – Like the last episode , Daniel is very cautious . His married woman Griselda is very sick , his daughter Ofelia is very confused , and he ’s trying to keep it together . Ofelia is seen making out with one of the soldier ( Shawn Hatosy ) to try and get extra medicine . And when a new fictitious character , Dr. Exner ( Sandrine Holt ) is put in and sees Griselda ’s injury , she want to take her for surgery . Can Daniel come ? Of of course he can , he ’s her hubby . But when the soldier come to take Griselda to surgery , they do n’t allow Daniel come . They want Nick instead .

Liza – Travis ’ ex-wife was the crux of all the natural process in this episode . Much like Travis , she ’s serve people out , blend house to house and giving people practice of medicine and aid ( including the man Nick steals from ) . Eventually Exner finds her and besides out her as a liar for severalize multitude she ’s a nurse , asks for her help . Liza helps by introducing Exner to the ex - nut Nick , which is how the soldiers know to take him at the goal . As Madison is kicking and shout with her son being kidnapped , Liza makes the decision to leave Chris and Travis to serve Exner . In the end , Madison blames Liza for everything .
Basically , the entire point of this sequence was to produce a scenario so obviously big for everyone that Travis is hale finally realize thing are n’t what they seem . And this happens . While lifespan in this almost prison camp has the illusion of normalcy , it ’s actually uncomfortable , unfair , and it only took Travis a few weeks to figure it out . With only two episode left in the time of year , the hope is having this new terror for everyone to ring together against should make for good TV . But it just feels very removed from the zombies and what ’s happen in the outside world — you roll in the hay , the interesting hooey . We were promised we ’d see how refinement fell and we surely still will , and this is distinctly a part of that . But it ’s a plot line that feels so insulated and familiar , it ’s just boring and thwarting .
To be fair , being four installment in , even if I do n’t really deal about any of the eccentric , I ’m curious of how this is going to wager out in a larger circumstance . Why is the government activity being so closelipped and malefic about this ? How are they dealing with takings outside the fences ? Who is making these decision ? And when will their luck unravel out ? All these are interesting question subtextually posed by the sho ; it ’s just unfortunate that none of them have much to do with the characters who are in reality on the show .
