Chronicle be approximately 1/20th as much to make as last year ’s Green Lantern — and it looks way cooler . This picture about teenagers who get power has some of the coolheaded depictions of superpowers we ’ve seen in ages . Whether they ’re fly or dispose diddly around , the adolescent in Chronicle always finger like they ’re really doing this .
That ’s the big accomplishment of Chronicle , really — the legerdemain that this is just someone ’s camcorder footage is not fall apart when people start doing things that resist the laws of physics . It all looks totally substantial . spoiler forward …
Chronicle is a fairly cracking film in world-wide , but what really bear out is how well it makes the “ found footage ” fashion of film - devising feel fresh . The whole thing feels seamless , and as the consequence - heavy sequences get more and more dominant , the movie never loses its “ you are there ” feeling . Everybody involved with this movie has obviously given a lot of mentation to how to make a story of three teenagers developing psychokinesis as un - bogus as possible . ( Although there are one or two “ levitating egg ” shots early on that look a scrap CG , for certain . )

That goes into every part of the “ super - powered stemma story ” data format , from the matter - of - fact mode the three teenagers stumble into dumbfound their powers , to the fumbling , random mode they learn to use them , to the casualness with which they start using their business leader once they ’re salutary at them .
To the extent that any of us will ever know how to move thing with our brain , this feels right . You ’re left with a visceral sense that this is how it would really be . specially one or two bits gave me a chill — like one scene where two grapheme are arguing , and one of them just change state angrily and flies out the windowpane , and it feels just as natural as walking out the door . There ’s no horse sense of “ we spent a luck of money on this , let ’s show it in sluggish - second . ”
So in Chronicle , the all - important point of view camera is mostly held by a teenage male child named Andrew , who ’s your received weird misfit with an abusive dad and a nauseous mummy . The closest affair Andrew has to a acquaintance is his cousin Matt , who ’s somewhat more popular despite his dorky habit of quote not bad philosophers . ( Matt is the “ noetic ” of the chemical group . ) The third kid who gets great power is Steve , the pop nipper who ’s a shoo - in for Student Council President . Somehow , the three of them become a tight group of friend once they can move things with their minds .

Andrew starts carrying around a inexpensive camcorder because he wants to document his aliveness , but also because he want to have a barrier between him and everyone else . mass talk a set about how annoying it is that Andrew want to shoot everything , and we also get to see him abused by his dad , hoodlums in his locality , and browbeat at school . life sentence essentially blows for Andrew , and the tv camera is like a symbol of that fact . The other vista of the picture show expend some cunning technique , like cut off shot in the middle of people ’s conviction , to show how disconnected Andrew is .
Later , after the three kids get telekinetic world power , the camera becomes a symbol of something else — Andrew quickly figures out that he no longer need to hold the camera in his hand , at least not when there are no witnesses around . He can levitate the camera with his judgement , and get whatever television camera angle he want — this is used to enceinte essence in a few scenes , as Andrew have more originative and maybe weirder , too .
A few times during this movie , I found myself thinking to myself , “ This is why find footage movies exist . ”

So yeah , the main characters in the film are well - worn pilot . And the stuff and nonsense that bump in the film wo n’t be that much of a surprise to anyone who ’s date a moving-picture show about superpowers before . ( Or just the Star Trek instalment , “ Where No Man Has go Before . ” ) But on the plus side , the three leads are all utterly cast , and they give really strong functioning . In special , Alex Russell , as Matt , manages to bring a lot of judgment of conviction to setting where he tries to set limits for their powers , and he really sells his character ’s evolving kinship with the main character , Andrew . By the end of the motion-picture show , when Matt makes a surprising annunciation , it ’s gruelling not to be moved .
The other reason why the superpowers in Chronicle feel more “ real ” than the 1 in , say , Green Lantern , is that we see how get superpowers does n’t change anything . Most depictions of superpowers in American culture focusing on the relationship between “ swell power ” and “ gravid responsibility ” — as if smashing superpower automatically make you awing , and you just have to play responsibly . But Chronicle shows that having great powerfulness does n’t really deepen who you are , or who your parent are , or how masses see you . Great power does n’t commute anything , unless you ’re willing to make change .
Oh , and there ’s a Kick - Ass - esque scene latterly in the film where someone in reality attempt to put on a superhero costume , and it turns out about as well as it would in real life .

It ’s no accident that most of the really great superhero origin report are about teenagers . The process of figuring out how your physical structure is alter , the weirdness of having new power and traits , the feeling that your public is on the spur of the moment puzzle much swelled and more acute … it ’s a natural cluster of metaphors for coming of geezerhood .
So it ’s really the highest compliment you could give Chronicle , that this feels like the story of veridical kids , who come into their ability and fuck up and act out and chemical bond and fall apart . It ’s still early in 2012 , but this film is a reasonably enough contender to be among the yr ’s ten estimable science fiction or fantasy films .
