When Ben Affleck pay up directing duties on the solo Batman cinema , it was obvious things were grim . And while the latest rumor seems to paint a picture they ’re just develop worse , at least this time there may be a eloquent lining .
The new rumor come on in Forbes . They ’re reporting Matt Reeves ( Cloverfield , Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ) is indeed the frontrunner to take over directing duties vacated by Affleck and , if he does so , it might be with a brand new script .
Reportedly , the current script is by Affleck and DC Films guru Geoff Johns , with a cultivation by Batman v Superman and Justice League author Chris Terrio . However , that book “ will undergo satisfying changes and potential / probably another full revision ” once a new director takes over , harmonize to the report .
Warner Bros. has a rigid “ No remark on rumor ” policy so we have to take this with a metric grain of table salt . If it ’s true , though , it certainly makes a bunch of sense .
moving picture are their script . Period . If the script to The Batman was really good and everyone was confident with it , Affleck would have been shooting immediately . He certainly would n’t have leave the undertaking . or else , it seems likely the possibility of a not - quite - good - enough account is the chief perpetrator here . And since the director takes most of the inculpation on this ( everyone blame Zack Snyder for Batman v Superman , but never credited writers Terrio or David Goyer , correct ? ) Affleck got rid of that responsibility when he left . Should the moving picture not connect , whoever takes over sleep with the blame would fall entirely on their shoulder . They well be all-fired well confident the script works before holler “ Action . ” Which only means good things for the moving-picture show .
That is , unless , Warner Bros. and DC Films employ someone who just wants to make a Batman movie , book be damned . It ’s certainly not a foreign conception for a movie this size of it . If that ’s the vitrine , a rewrite would mean nothing . But , if they lease Matt Reeves , he is not that kind of person .
Again , Warner Bros. would not comment on this rumour but it does seem logical . Whenever a conductor is announced , there will likely be script news program along with it . That could pass today or it could happen after Justice League . At this point , there is no real rush .
So yeah , matter are looking drab . But you remember what they say about the obscure , proper ? It ’s always darkest before dawn .
Update : Several hours after this article originally posted , reliable Variety reporter Justin Kroll was asked about the veracity of these rumour on Twitter . His response ?
No , several sources already saying new script came in this month and everyone include Emmerich and Ben very happy with it

Which is basically the exact opposite of everything in the Forbes article we were sourcing . Which is why we call it a rumour .
Still , even if Kroll ’s author are telling him the accuracy , it seems like the reality could be somewhere in the middle . Even if the studio is happy with the Modern script , once they take a new film director , maybe that soul wo n’t be . That person could ask for a rewrite and then everyone would be telling the Sojourner Truth . However , this newfangled piece of information certainly suggests Warner Bros. is looking to hire someone willing to make their current book , not compose a new one .
The plot thickens and we ’ll have to wait and see .
