Batman ’s undergone countless switch in thousand of comics over the last eight years . Yet for all that storytelling , the genuine political sympathies of a Gotham City protected by an obsessed vigilante has been an under - explored feeling — and it ’s one Sean Murphy ’s going right to the heart of in Batman : White Knight .
The third page of Batman : White Knight # 1 serves as an introductory statement of spirit , let referee screw that the common conventions are n’t move to be rolling out here . Batman sit sourly in an Arkham Asylum cell until he ’s claver by his former archenemy , now cure and treat with deference by police officers .
We see the beginnings of the Joker ’s unlikely rehabilitation in the rest of the way out , which necessitate Batman acting out in an especially roughshod style . When I sat down with series creator Sean Murphy at New York Comic Con last hebdomad , he wanted to talk about social comment , where the former killer clown ’s journeying is going to take him , and who pay for all that superfight property damage in Gotham City .

io9 : I wanted to originate by asking about the societal comment and police brutality angles in progeny # 1 . Is that an designed part of the design or just the frame for presenting the Joker as a paladin ?
Sean Murphy : Yes , it ’s intentional . I wanted to touch on BLM and some issues that are ripped from the current headlines . There ’s even some gun ascendancy stuff there , later . But I wanted to write it as a centrist with characters on both sides . I did n’t desire to beat anyone over the headspring with politics . I ’m super left over and I wanted to recreate that down . To pass on across the aisle .
io9 : “ Centrist ” is kind of a marked-up give-and-take now .

potato : I know , yeah . But it ’s all intentional . I ’m using Duke Thomas in my book , too . He reps the Bed - Stuy of Gotham . And pig wo n’t go there so he ’s take matters into his own hands . Kind of a Luke coop - like vibe .
io9 : Is he a former Robin or something like that ? Has he been direct by Bruce and knickknackery ?
Murphy : No . He ’s a pig and carry a gunman . He wo n’t give it up . He ’s like , “ I know Bruce , I know throttle have ache you but they ’ve helped me . ” Like I enounce , I ’m trying to suppose a “ both slope ” scenario here .

io9 : Staying on law brutality , you ’re fundamentally treating Batman an avatar for DoS - enforced violence . So what are the genuine world conversations you ’ve had that are influencing the story ? On one hand , you ’re de - coupling it from a raceway - centrical perspective , which is where a lot of the law barbarity conversations happen . But at the same metre , it ’s an exit that bear upon everybody .
Irish potato : You acknowledge , one of the helpful things was , I have these two newscasters in the story , one who was more conservative and one who ’s more liberal . One ’s sinister and one ’s white . I have them sing about what ’s travel on in a Frank Miller - vogue style , where they disagree on what this is and what ’s offensive . So when Joker — Jack Napier , now — get a groundswell of accompaniment from this mostly black community that ’s been unrepresented , multitude are upset .
Like , “ Why is this white guy representing all these black people ? ” And then the black news anchor tell , “ They will take any help that they can get . The only reason that Jack is empowered is because Duke Thomas is behind him . ” So , yeah , it poses a lot of questions . As a author , I ’m not taking a stance . I just desire to throw out a lot of poppycock in there because I see Gotham as a actual city , not as a comic book city . And I really want to bestow in some modern headlines to see how that would mold . I know I ’m risking a lot …

io9 : As long as you have intercourse that . There ’s a lot of talk about ethnic appropriation these day , and how characters from different backgrounds get used in story . It ’s all very pregnant . But you ’re saying you know that .
potato : Yeah . I have a thick skin . After Punk Rock Jesus , I got death threats from Christians . I think I ’m machinate for this .
io9 : So what kind of politician is Jack Napier ? What ’s his company personal credit line ?

tater : He wants to interpret the middle and lower class who are unrepresented , who do n’t have enough resources . When Jack gets freed in issue two — spoilers — he take the settlement from the city and habituate it to make a library in the Bed - Stuy of Gotham . hear to help oneself people out with these societal programs , a club where kids can go .
io9 : He sounds like a New Deal Democrat .
tater : Could be ! He get groundswell supporting from that community but does n’t run for city manager or anything big , just metropolis council . But it gives him enough of an border where he has a say and he really leverages that to lash out at the one percent . He finds out that when Batman destroy a neighborhood , there ’s public financial support that get that neighborhood back . So these rich people would buy [ property ] after Batman ’s destroyed a neighborhood . There ’s one - percenters making money off Batman ’s criminal offense and Batman is n’t even aware of this .

io9 : Holy gentrification , Batman …
Murphy : But why would n’t that actually befall ? When Batman finds out , he ’s upset . He ’s not a scoundrel [ in this history ] because he ’s a one - percenter . He ’s sick because [ it ’s ] his own friends at these cocktails parties . That they would even do that , you make love ?
io9 : How else does the Joker design to change Gotham ?

Irish potato : Eventually he settle Batman is a financial obligation and he needs to be arrested . There ’s an accident that happens . Batman interferes with the police and it ’s such a vast problem that they demand to do something . And they do n’t want to arrest him . But they postulate him out of the way of life for a lilliputian while .
io9 : He needs a Bat - intervention . That stuff in the first issue where Nightwing and Batgirl complain to each other about how he does n’t even take heed was so great .
Murphy : He does need one . Because he ’s not listening to anybody . finally Batgirl and Nightwing ca n’t reach out to him . Alfred ’s not there .

io9 : Your rendering of Bruce is far more maladjusted than the very maladjusted Bruce is in the mainline continuity .
Murphy : He ’s having a bad twenty-four hour period . He ’s just thwarted . How many times can you capture the Joker , have him say all these weird things to you in front of everybody … finally you just rupture . You have to crack .
io9 : You mentioned Alfred . How does he respond to all this poppycock ? Because all along , he ’s judge to be the voice of sanity in Bruce ’s life . Is he going to say , “ Wait a arcminute … the Joker is actually talking sense now ? ”

tater : So , Alfred is in a coma from issue one . And Bruce is helping keep him alive by using Mr. Freeze technical school . Alfred ’s out of the depiction , and it ’s kind of why Bruce is suffer this moral crisis . So when Nightwing and Babs find out about this , it starts to [ make sense as to ] why he ’s losing it . Because Alfred is his father .
Batman : White Knight # 2 is due out on November 1 .
