A number of seaside nations are expanding their coastlines by constructing offshore artificial island — beautifully structured land multitude that are being used for touristry , the commercial-grade sector and even residential purposes . But rising ocean level are making this a precarious proposal at well , particularly for the Maldives — a country that ’s just five feet above sea grade . But ferment with a Dutch troupe , the land may have issue forth up with a rather elegant solution : float island .
Reporting in PopSci Katerine Gammondescribes the project :
The Maldivian government activity has started a joint venture with the architectural business firm Dutch Docklands International to build up the world ’s largest artificial float - island project , which will stay above water no matter how many glacier unfreeze . In the Netherlands , the company has already build floating island for prisons and housing from slabs of concrete and polystyrene foam . For the Maldives , it will ground similar complex body part to the seabed using cables or telescopic mooring line sight , construct landforms that are stable even in storms . The design disturbs only a small patch of the seafloor while preserving natural current . And many little islands are more ecologically sound than one large one because they cast smaller shadows on the water , minimize the shock on sea life . Although the company is starting to work up an island for 200 opulence mansion house and another for a floating golf game course this year , it is working on architectural plan to construct island for more affordable housing next .
