For whatever reason , there are a stack of new musical style funniness coming out this TV season . The lesser ones are mine comedy alone from their premiss . The dear one , like citizenry of Earth , are using its premiss to explore characters .
citizenry of Earth is a show with aspiration that seem much large than the half - hr comedy time slot it fills . In a nutshell , the show is about a support group for people who have experienced alien abductions . It set out with a reporter call Ozzie ( Wyatt Cenac ) investigate the group for a possible story , only for him to break that they ’re not delusional . There is something alien that ’s interfered with their lives . And there ’s something weird about Beacon , the town they ’ve all end up in .
That premise sounds like it could be a fun sketch — the crazy masses are actually correct!—but the show is determined not to make jokes out of their role . Revealing that there are aliens mightily off the chiropteran save this show . Instead of ask if the members of the group are correct , the question is now how correct they are . And how much of their accounts have been embroidered by their own personal baggage .
One instalment focuses on Richard ( Brian Huskey ) , a shining instance of what this show can do . Richard is a dead on target conspiracist , see substance from the extraterrestrial being who capture his married woman in everything . And , yeah , we make out that he ’s proper about alien live , but he ’s not right about everything . It ’s heartbreaking to see him move around every piece of bad news into something that ’s part of a grander extraterrestrial design , because sometimes aliveness just absorb and it ’s not outlander . It ’s infant steps for Richard to accept even a little bit of that . And the show make his situation funny and tragic at the same time .
At the end of the Clarence Shepard Day Jr. , the show ’s central conceit is n’t the aliens , although they are hilarious . It ’s what the aliens told each member of the group : “ You are special . ” For the show , what ’s special is how each member of the group reacts to what befall to them . Richard create a full - blown mythology . The radical leader , Gina ( Ana Gasteyer ) , turn away the subject matter but embrace helping the group . Ozzie , an fact-finding journalist , is set to figure out what ’s going on . Another part uses her clash to deal with a bad marriage and another with a stalled life . A third exercises her desire to chit-chat and being in thrill through the chemical group .
The show ’s trouble is that it has too much stuff to fit in a half - hour comedy . When I watched ( and delight ) the fender at San Diego Comic - Con , it did n’t seem overstuff ; now that I ’ve seen screener of the first four instalment , it ’s a portion more obtrusive , although I still savor it . It might have too many lineament to attend them all as well as it would like . Or mayhap there are too few arcminute in an episode . There ’s definitely too few episodes overall ( the first season top out at 10 ) .
Ideally , mass of Earth would be mate with The Good Place , another new comedy which has a high - conception assumption which dig into the backstories of its theatrical role , and has a lot to say about the human precondition . Both are bully show that may be reaching a bit too far . And both are rocket through plot points when you ’d cerebrate they ’d require to draw the mystery out longer . However , in People of Earth , where the strength is the characters , not the story , it ’s a good matter .
People of Earth is deserving look out . It ’s funny and weird and the performing is large . And I want to see it get more space to do all the affair it ’s trying to accomplish .
