Tiny plankton known as dinoflagellate light up the urine like a glow stick at night . But since January , theglow has faded , throwing the entire Puerto Rican town into a terror .
Vieques is a small island about 10 mile from Puerto Rico ’s main island . All it is known for , really , is its bioluminescent true laurel , one of the most famous in the Earth . This is why tourists have flocked here to kayak at night . This is also why the dinoflagellates ’ sudden disappearing has the town in a flap .
For now , tours are being restrain to just weekend to minimize human perturbation of the bay . Some also suspect kerfuffle from a shit road nearby . Scientists have been studying the water , though agent like temperature , salinity , and pH look to be fine . A leading theory is that shifts in the breaking wind management have pushed dinoflagellates out of the bay .
Elsewhere in the Caribbean , bioluminescent bay have live on dark temporarily and come back . But others have not . There is n’t a unifying theory explaining the coming into court of dinoflagellates , but it ’s clear that something is afoot in Mosquito Bay . [ New York Times ]
