TheWilliamsburg Bridgehas span the East River since 1903 , connect what ’s now Brooklyn ’s most notoriously hip(ster ) locality to Manhattan . In the 1980s , the bridge was in serious disrepair — andarchitects wanted to supplant itwith a mirror - last masterpiece top with a restaurant . Imagine the horizon !
DRC Consultants Inc. , Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas Inc. and Der Scutt , architects , team up up to make the blueprint . It envisioned a bridge circuit withtowers wrapped in ruminative panel , “ giving the appearance of a warm , cinnamon - colored pensive gem in the East River , bring a new elegance and new living to the surrounding surface area in Manhattan and Brooklyn . ” Inverted Triangulum structures atop the bridge ’s 456 - foot pillar would put up a two - story eating place on the Brooklyn side , and a bridge circuit museum on the Manhattan side .
The programme was never actualise : rather than replacing the bridge deck , city leaders decided to refurbish it in a series ofconstruction project that continue to this day . But it ’s fascinating to conceive of what it would ’ve been corresponding to have lunch on top of the Williamsburg Bridge .

I bet the folks living in Williamsburg would love it . I ’m differentiate they ’re crazy about poppycock from the 80s . [ Der Scutt ArchitectviaGothamist ]
